Indigenous Indianapolis

This was a small exhibit meant to highlight several of the Indigenous groups who lived in the area that became Indianapolis. Thematically, the text addresses the displacement experienced by Indigenous people around the time that the city was founded and asks viewers to consider the sources of historical information about Indigenous people; who is doing the writing and whose narratives have been considered trusted?

This exhibit opened in November of 2021 to coincide with a presentation given by Ed Fujawa (ISCR Lecture Series: The Indigenous History of Indianapolis). Some of the exhibit text is adapted from his blog post, The Native American Presence at the Founding of Indianapolis.
