I jumped at the chance to take Astronomy, to go back to Latin, and to (unknowingly!) suffer through History of Music.

Next, I invested time into pursuing old interests like the weather and things that originated in Britain.

In the summer, I joined the seasonal education staff at my local zoo-- a choice that has echoed through my whole career, introducing me to informal education, interpretation, and working with living collections!

YEAR:
FALL

Though I ultimately chose another program, I saw something that resonated with me in the Communications program. I knocked out my public speaking requirement, where I gave a speech on SSP programs, and took a seminar on Environmental Communications. I had started to find a direction, but not a major.

History is part of everything. To study any field, you have to study its history; you have to know the foundation on which you're building.

I'm good at digging for information and making meaning out of scattered pieces. History is about asking questions and trying to assemble stories.

Once I had a major, I threw myself into classes about ancient Rome and medieval Europe, which would become recurring themes in my work.

After another summer at the zoo, I explored Anthropology and kept a European focus, continuing to pursue medival topics as well as studying the century leading up to World War II, focused on Germany.

That spring was the most demanding semester of all. I covered essentials like Historical Methods and Art History, along with the Formation of Modern Africa, the Vietnam War, Greek Mythology, and a Medieval Culture course that let me write a term paper about bears.

After a 3rd summer working for the zoo, I got to explore a different part of the ancient world with a course on ancient Egypt as well as an extremely formative class on British Imperialism. I also got to spend time with more modern culture, including a class about film.

Europe and the ancient Greco-Roman world featured heavily in my course choices right up until the end. My only online course, Museums and Communities, was during this semester, which gave me just the slightest preview of what was coming next!
