Formative Evaluation
My fellowship project focused on developing and conducting evaluation of the interpretive elements planned for the Simon Skjodt International Orangutan Center, which opened in 2014. I wrote evaluation plans for labels/panels planned for both exterior and interior spaces, completed data collection, analysis, and reporting for these interpretive elements, and worked with other staff members to amend the original panels based on our findings.
The exhibit was designed to be a new kind of experience for both zoo guests and its orangutan residents. The structure of the exhibit mimics a small forest, which allows the animals to make the kinds of spatial and social choices they would in the wild, such as the ability to watch other orangutans from significant distances away and to climb outdoor structures that reach tree heights. The International Orangutan Center was honored with the AZA Exhibit Award for Innovation in 2015.

Drag Slider

I tested an early mockup version of this banner through a combination of observations and short interviews with guests. We were curious to know how interesting the infographic-style inset panel would be to guests and we were also trying to gain insight into the height and vertical orientation may have influenced how people interacted with it.
During a 5-day testing window, we learned that the large photo and basketball-themed infographic were the parts of the banner that most drew people over to it. These elements were retained and emphasized in the final design. We were also able to feel confident that the height and orientation were not a significant barrier for guests.
